Some great math concepts that you can touch on during your every day life are listed below:
When shopping, ask your child what he/she thinks an item will cost. Was the guess greater or less? Can they estimate the cost to the nearest dollar or dime? Ask your child to estimate the price of two or more of the same item.
Ask your child to calculate how many packages of rolls, juices or snacks needed to feed a certain number of people. Will there be any remainders?
Show your child that 1/2 of a large pizza is a greater amount than 1/2 of a small pizza. Compare different fractional amounts, such as 1/4 to 2/3.
Allow your child to bake with you to become familiar with measuring amounts of dry and liquid ingredients.
Ask your child to describe the shapes they see, and compare 2 or more of them, using geometric terms like parallel, intersecting and perpendicular lines, acute, obtuse and right angles, and number of sides.
Include your son or daughter when measuring lengths of objects and show how you determined the length to the nearest 1/4 or 1/8 inch.
